We are only one mammal on the planet – but we often forget our animal nature, lost as we are in our alpha position.
On ……., Inkslingers takes writers to the Toronto Zoo for a day of immersion in a world both as alien and as familiar as our own breathing, moving bodies.
When it comes to our minds, psyches and stories, animals are the material of legend and spirit, dreams and companionship. Mammals, birds, insects, reptiles — they are intimately bound up with our evolution on the planet. Spend this day slowing down and engaging with your own animal nature and your observations and reactions to the world of the Other.
Writers will be given prompts and exercises and encouragement throughout the day designed to help engage with the bones of each person’s material and writer’s craft. You will leave this day with your notebook full of observations, experiments and the material for new stories, essays and poems.
At the end of the day, there’s an optional reading at a local restaurant to try out one of the new pieces you’ve created. (The first drink is on us if you need a little liquid encouragement to share your work aloud with your fellow writers.)
However, sharing is always optional of course.
