A Novel Approach to Fiction & Memoir

A NOVEL APPROACH FIRST DRAFT helps you START & FINISH your NOVEL or MEMOIR, and provides ongoing instruction in the essential creative writing skills.

A NOVEL APPROACH SECOND DRAFT helps you prepare your FICTION or MEMOIR manuscript (and yourself) for the challenges of the publication process.

We start our 12th Year in the Fall of 2020.

COVID-19 UPDATE:

TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF OUR WRITERS, A NOVEL APPROACH IS ONLY AVAILABLE ONLINE UNTIL GROUP SAFETY STANDARDS PERMIT THE RESUMPTION OF IN-PERSON CLASSES.

FIRST DRAFT

A Novel Approach supplies the discipline and positive support to produce the FIRST DRAFT of a manuscript in 3000 word increments, every two weeks, (a total of 22 classes and approximately 70,000 words) to produce the first draft of a novel or memoir.

You post your writing on a secure website where only your facilitator and classmates can read and make positive comments.

You also MEET every two weeks with your classmates in an online (ZOOM) GROUP to write, share new writing and develop the fundamental skills of writing a book-length project:

  • creating story
  • developing interesting characters
  • defining narrative arcs and emotional transformations
  • designing scenes
  • exploring story structure options
  • deciding on points of view
  • and much more…

Each class also includes a discussion on the important elements of long project writing while emphasizing the completion of the first draft of a novel or memoir. Your writing and critiquing skills will grow as the writing year progresses.

And all in the company of like-minded writers.

Maximum class size: 7 plus the instructor

SECOND DRAFT

A NOVEL APPROACH to FICTION or MEMOIR (Second Draft) is designed to help you prepare your manuscript (and yourself) for the challenges of the publication process. This workshop is also ideal for authors who have already tried rewrites and are unhappy with the results, or who have received feedback from an agent or editor who has suggested new approaches.

A NOVEL APPROACH SECOND DRAFT INVOLVES A THREE PART PROCESS:
(Time Span: usually 4 to 6 months)

PART 1: OBTAIN A SUBSTANTIVE EDIT of your Manuscript to find out what is working well and what could be even better.
(Available anytime during the year)
Sue reviews MEMOIR. James reviews FICTION.

PART 2: PLAN YOUR REWRITE and FINISH it on a biweekly schedule with your Substantive Editor.

Each author requires an individualized approach, so depending on the time available and the extent of the rewrite plan, this program is offered in an online biweekly feedback format to serve each author’s needs.

PART 3: Learn how to NAVIGATE the PUBLISHING MARKETPLACE with CONFIDENCE in an intensive 9 week workshop. (led by James Dewar)

This workshop is offered once a year in the fall on 9 consecutive Thursday evenings, 7:00-9:30. This year the Intensive starts on September 10th.

Registration closes on SEPTEMBER 1st, or when maximum enrollment is reached.

NOTE: YOU DO NOT HAVE TO COMPLETE PART 1 and PART 2 with Sue or James to REGISTER FOR THE 9 WEEK INTENSIVE. However, the value of this intensive workshop is substantially enhanced if James has read your finished manuscript. Please review the timetable and reading fee option guidelines to ensure your manuscript arrives in early August so James has enough time to read it before the first class on September 10th.

Some of our writers have gone on to be published, win awards and even obtain multiple book publishing contracts.

A Novel Approach is also available in an OnLine one-on-one Mentorship format.
