The AWA Workshop Leadership Training is a five-day intensive course in the AWA method. This training will prepare you to lead writing workshops for the general population and for traditionally silenced people in places such as public housing, shelters, hospitals or prisons.
The AWA Workshop Leadership Training is a five-day intensive course in the AWA method. The guidelines and practices that shape AWA writing workshops are quite specific, and the leader’s in-depth understanding of them is vitally important to the effectiveness of the group. This training will prepare you to lead workshops for the general population and for traditionally silenced people in places such as public housing, shelters, hospitals or prisons. In addition to the specific AWA practices, skills that will be taught include:
- Creating and maintaining a safe and hospitable writing environment.
- Choosing effective writing exercises and prompts.
- Being a clear, supportive leader.
- Running workshops as a business.
- Understanding the transformative power of the method.
- Structuring the writing workshop to accommodate the needs of diverse people.
- Understanding essential differences between writing for healing and therapy.
- Inviting experimentation and growth in participants’ writing.
AWA Workshop Leadership is taught through writing sessions, talks by experienced leaders, group discussion, role playing, film, and guest speakers, giving participants a full experience of the AWA method in action. Upon completion of the training, participants will have a thorough understanding of the AWA method, our practices and guidelines, and will be able to convey them effectively to their workshop members.

If you have a WordPress-based Website (or you’re planning on having one built for you) and you’d like to manage it yourself, this is the workshop that will embed the skills you need to take this important and money-saving step.
Perhaps you currently have a free WordPress blog and you need to upgrade to a site that does not limit your capacity to sell your products or promote yourself as a commercial entity.
Maybe you just want to save the maintenance costs.
Maybe it’s as simple as wanting to be able to update your website whenever you want, or the excitement of developing your skills to the point of true web independence.
This workshop will give you WordPress autonomy and teach you a number of basic as well as more advanced skills on a WordPress-based website.
In this hands-on workshop, participants will learn how to:
- create and update pages and posts 24/7
- add pictures, video and audio files
- reposition text and pictures into different arrangements
- generate interactive discussions on site
- create “ads” (from simple text to embedded videos) that stay visible on every page
- install a subscription service to notify clients/friends every time an update is made
- learn how to optimize your site for search engines by yourself
- monitor which pages are being viewed the most, how people are finding the site, and more

Please note these prerequisites:
Participants must bring a laptop with wireless capability. We have arranged for Trent University to supply participants with guest wireless access during the workshop, but computers will not be provided.
(Note: If you do not have an existing WordPress website, or websites are completely foreign to you, we offer a workshop just for you. Our last workshop was on March 19th in the same location:
Instructors:

James Dewar and Sue Reynolds have been building WordPress websites since 2006 – everything from small sites with only a few pages to massive sites that manage client databases, multiple ongoing discussion forums and other sophisticated applications.
They believe in the “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime” philosophy when it comes to managing client websites – empower clients to manage their own content.
Of course James and Sue will stay in the background like pleased parents ready to provide support if there are questions.
